Case study
high glass speed gate installation at leicester college
EA Group recently installed new high glass speed gates at a college in Leicester, replacing an existing system that had reached the end of its operational life.
About the Client
The college’s existing speed gates had become increasingly difficult to maintain as replacement components became harder to source.
With some parts no longer available, the college needed a longer-term solution that would provide greater reliability and improve pedestrian flow through the entrance.
The challenge
The original speed gates had reached end-of-life status.
As the system aged, the original manufacturer was either unable to provide replacement components or supply was subject to lengthy delays. EA Group’s maintenance team had been using remaining stock and salvaged parts where possible to keep the gates operational.
Eventually, the necessary components were no longer available on the market, making continued repairs unsustainable.
Client objectives
The college needed a replacement entrance system that would:
· Improve long-term reliability
· Reduce reliance on obsolete components
· Make replacement parts easier to source
· Improve throughput during busy periods
· Retain high glass lanes at the entrance

The solution
EA Group supplied and installed new high glass speed gates to replace the existing units.
The new system uses components that can be sourced locally and off the shelf if replacements are required, helping to simplify future maintenance and reduce the risk of prolonged downtime.
Optimised sensors and faster mechanical response times also allow people to move through the entrance more efficiently, supporting higher throughput at peak times.
What EA did
EA Group:
· Removed the need to continue maintaining an end-of-life system
· Installed new high glass speed gates
· Provided a system with more readily available replacement components
· Improved reliability at the entrance
· Introduced faster response times and optimised sensors to support pedestrian flow
The installation process
We followed a structured process designed to minimise disruption:
REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT
The ageing speed gates were replaced with new high glass units, removing the need to continue maintaining an end-of-life system.
INSTALLATION
New high glass speed gates were installed within the college’s existing entrance, retaining the high glass lanes in the reception area.
SYSTEM OPTIMISATION
Optimised sensors and faster mechanical response times were introduced to improve pedestrian flow and support higher throughput during busy periods.
Testing and handover
The completed installation provided the college with a more reliable entrance system, with replacement components that are easier to source and maintain.
The Results
The college now has a more reliable entrance system that is easier to maintain over the long term.
With locally available replacement parts, improved sensor performance and faster mechanical response times, the new speed gates also support more efficient movement through the entrance during busy periods.
