Case study
High glass swing lane installation at Southbank Centre, London
About the Client
Southbank Centre is the UK’s largest arts centre and has been part of London’s cultural landscape since 1951. Its venues host music, performance, exhibitions, talks and other events throughout the year.
EA Group was appointed to upgrade the access control lanes within the artist entrance and stage door area.
The challenge
The client was refitting an entrance area and needed to replace ageing, waist-height speed lanes installed by another manufacturer that no longer met their security requirements.
The refit also required new lanes in a section of the building where none had existed before. In that section of the building the floor had a slight incline that posed a risk to installation accuracy and long-term reliability.
Beyond the physical challenge, the client needed the new lanes to integrate seamlessly with their existing access control provider, and to be completed on a tight timeline.
Client objectives
The client wanted to replace the ageing speed lanes with a more secure solution featuring taller glass panels.
The new installation also needed to extend access control into the ramped area while working with the existing floor levels and the client’s chosen access control system.

The solution
EA Group supplied and installed high glass swing lanes across both areas, replacing the ageing waist-height lanes with a taller, more secure barrier.
To accommodate the floor incline without compromising alignment or stability, EA provided templates that allowed the client to create the required floor packing before installation.
EA can manufacture these components in stainless steel, but the client chose to fabricate them directly using the supplied templates.
Integrating with the client’s existing access control system meant readers needed to sit on the vertical faces of the lane cabinets. EA produced bespoke printed mounts specifically for the client’s access control provider, allowing the readers to be installed exactly where required.
The installation process
EA Group completed the project within a short timeframe, from the initial order through to installation.
Preparing the ramped area
The additional lanes were being installed on a slight incline. EA Group supplied templates that allowed the client to produce the necessary floor packing before the lanes were fitted.
Bespoke access control mounts
The client wanted the access control readers positioned on the vertical faces of the cabinets. EA Group produced bespoke printed mounts for the client’s access control provider, allowing the readers to be fitted in the required location.
Installing the new lanes
The ageing waist-height lanes were replaced with high glass swing lanes. Additional lanes were also installed across the ramped section, extending controlled access into an area that had not previously had entrance lanes.
Fast project turnaround
EA Group was able to manufacture and install the new lanes considerably faster than the other suppliers being considered. This quick turnaround was one of the main reasons EA Group was selected for the project.
The Results
The completed installation provided Southbank Centre with:
- Taller high glass lanes in place of the ageing waist-height units
- Controlled access across the previously unrestricted ramped area
- A solution adapted to the building’s existing floor levels
- Bespoke reader mounts designed around the client’s access control requirements
- Delivery within the client’s required timeframe
