Case study

South Hampshire College Group

South Hampshire College Group wanted to upgrade their access control system to improve security, improve entry for students, staff, and visitors, and reduce the risk of unauthorised access. With limited security systems in place, access control took a manual approach with reception check-ins, leaving gaps in security. We provided a modern entrance solution that addressed key concerns, at the same time integrating the system with the college’s existing infrastructure.

About the client

As a leading educational institution operating across multiple campuses, South Hampshire College Group serves thousands of students and staff members. The group brings together 3 sites in Eastleigh, Fareham and Southampton, each catering to a diverse student population engaged in a variety of academic and vocational programs.

As an institution that welcomes a high volume of daily visitors, including students, faculty, and external guests, maintaining a secure, controlled, and efficient access system is essential. With open campus environments and multiple entry points, it was crucial to onboard a solution that prevents unauthorised access, boosts safety, and provides a smooth traffic flow.

The challenge

issues with existing system

The college had no physical entry barriers, meaning access control relied solely on RFID ID cards or manual registration at reception. A major flaw in this system was the ability
for unauthorised individuals to follow others into buildings without presenting any credentials.

Client objectives

  • Boost security by preventing tailgating and unauthorised entry.
  • Introduce a physical access control system that integrates with existing RFID ID cards.
  • Promote a smooth traffic flow for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Avoid disruption to underfloor services and finished flooring during installation.

The solution

EA Group’s process

With many years’ experience in security and access control solutions, we provided South Hampshire College Group with an advanced security system that catered to their growing needs. After surveying the campuses and assessing the requirements, we installed EA Swing HG Speed Gates for efficiency, aesthetics and security.

Three speed lanes were installed at both the front and rear entrances of each campus, directing all entrants through a controlled access point. With glass balustrades used to close off open areas, the system allows all individuals to pass through efficiently.

To overcome the challenge of underfloor services and finished floors, we designed a non-slip stainless steel ramped base with hidden cable containment, eliminating the need for floor channelling and avoiding disruption to existing infrastructure.

The installation process

We followed a 4-step process for installing Trent Water’s new high-glass speed gate:

Initial consultation and planning

EA assessed the site and devised a bespoke solution tailored to campus needs.

underfloor mapping and design

Our team worked closely with the college’s maintenance department, identifying potential hazards and mapping underfloor services using thermal imaging technology.

scheduled, phased installation

To make sure the project caused minimal disruption, the installation was carefully scheduled during normal operating hours, with safety barriers and warnings implemented to protect students and staff. We took a phased approach, maintaining a secure and operational environment whilst the project was underway.

Key challenges overcome

  • Legacy system integration
The new speed gates were seamlessly integrated with the college’s existing RFID access control system.
  • Tailgating prevention
Advanced anti-tailgating technology removes the threat of unauthorised follow-in entries.
  • Floor protection
A non-slip ramped base avoided disturbance to underfloor services, preserving the college’s infrastructure.

The results and benefits of speed gates

Following the successful installation at the first two campuses, South Hampshire College Group commissioned us to implement the same system at their Southampton campus, reinforcing the effectiveness of the solution.
